The short-lived movie company, Aspen Pictures, was founded by ROBERT WISE and former RKO colleague Mark Robson in 1951. Filmed in Samoa and based on James A. Michener’s book of the same title, Return to Paradise starred GARY COOPER as an island drifter who falls in love with a lovely Polynesian girl. Nominated for an Academy Award for Best Director for I Want to Live! (1958), Wise won Academy Awards for Best Director for West Side Story (1961) and The Sound of Music (1965). Cooper was nominated for Academy Awards for Best Actor for Mr. Deeds Goes to Town (1936), The Pride of the Yankees (1942) and For Whom the Bell Tolls (1943) and won Academy Awards for Best Actor for Sergeant York (1941) and High Noon (1952).
